Starting in September 2021 and January 2022
At Gloucestershire College, we believe supporting our employers is just as important as supporting our apprentices. We work with start-up businesses through to industry giants, listening to their needs and requirements to deliver training and support that works for them.
From day one, our Business Hub team is on hand to answer any questions, to help you recruit new construction and trade apprentices and to ensure you get the right training for your business.
Whether you want to hire an apprentice for the first time or you’ve been recruiting apprentices with us for years, we work with our employers on a one-to-one basis providing the support that’s right for you.
Your Training Coordinator will be your point of contact at the college, keeping you updated on your apprentice’s progress and achievements with regular visits to your workplace.
When you recruit a construction apprentice or a trade apprentice, they will benefit from being a part of our thriving Gloucestershire College community, vibrant campuses, vast facilities and all the pastoral care that comes with college life. We keep our class sizes small so apprentices can have as much one-to-one time with our expert lecturers and tutors as possible.
Tutors and training coordinators make regular visits to apprentices in their work environment and apply learning directly to their real-world roles. Should there be any challenges, concerns or questions, your Training Coordinator will be on hand to help.
Apprenticeship incentive payments
If you recruit a trade apprentice or construction apprentice between now and 30 September 2021, you will receive £3,000 per apprentice regardless of their age. If they are aged between 16-18, you will receive an extra £1,000!
Incentives for apprentice recruitment have never been higher so if you’ve been questioning whether to take on an apprentice, now is the perfect time to do so.
Using the Apprentice Levy and government funding
If your company has less than 50 employees and you take on a 16-18-year-old, you are entitled to receive the apprenticeship training completely free of charge.
If you are not a levy payer (your wage bill is less than £3 million), you will contribute just 5% of the total cost of your trade or construction apprenticeship training, the government will pay the remaining 95%.
If you pay the apprenticeship levy, as well as receiving the incentive payments from the government, we can support you to maximise your levy strategy and make the most of funding on offer. You can use your levy funds to bring in new talent to the business, or upskill employees through apprenticeships and help reduce skills gaps.

Who can do an apprenticeship?
The minimum age is 16. There is no upper age limit. Both existing employees and new recruits can do an apprenticeship. Part-time members of staff can an apprenticeship, so long as they are working more than 16 hours per week. We have apprentices of all ages at Gloucestershire College including many adult learners.
What does it cost to recruit an apprentice?
At Gloucestershire College, we offer a free recruitment service. We can help find the right talent for your business and support you every step of the way. If your company has less than 50 employees and you take on a 16-18-year-old, you are entitled to receive the apprenticeship training completely free of charge. Otherwise, you will pay just a fraction of the training cost and the government will cover the rest. How much should I pay a construction or trade apprentice?
From April 2021, the national minimum wage for an apprentice is £4.30. The vast majority of our employers offer apprentices more than this but our advisors are on hand to guide you.
How do I recruit an apprentice for my business?

We offer a free apprentice recruitment service and will advertise your vacancy on the National Apprenticeship Website, GlosJobs and LinkedIn as well as on our live vacancies page. Our team will pre-screen and interview candidates before providing you with a shortlist of anonymised applicants. When will my apprentice be able to start working on site / on customer projects?
Your apprentice will be with you from day one. Just like with any employee, they will need to be shown the ropes. Your apprentice will have weekly day release to college, growing their skills throughout their apprenticeship and will be able to start working on your site from week one.
