Costs and funding to recruit a construction or building services apprentice
Using the Apprentice Levy and government funding
If your company has less than 50 employees and you take on a 16-18-year-old, you are entitled to receive the apprenticeship training completely free of charge.
If you are not a levy payer (your wage bill is less than £3 million), you will contribute just 5% of the total cost of your trade or construction apprenticeship training, the government will pay the remaining 95%.
If you pay the apprenticeship levy, as well as receiving the incentive payments from the government, we can support you to maximise your levy strategy and make the most of funding on offer. You can use your levy funds to bring in new talent to the business, or upskill employees through apprenticeships and help reduce skills gaps.

Who can do an apprenticeship?
The minimum age is 16. There is no upper age limit. Both existing employees and new recruits can do an apprenticeship. Part-time members of staff can an apprenticeship, so long as they are working more than 16 hours per week. We have apprentices of all ages at Gloucestershire College including many adult learners.

What does it cost to recruit an apprentice?
At Gloucestershire College, we offer a free recruitment service. We can help find the right talent for your business and support you every step of the way. If your company has less than 50 employees and you take on a 16-18-year-old, you are entitled to receive the apprenticeship training completely free of charge. Otherwise, you will pay just a fraction of the training cost and the government will cover the rest. How much should I pay a construction or trade apprentice?
From April 2021, the national minimum wage for an apprentice is £4.30. The vast majority of our employers offer apprentices more than this but our advisors are on hand to guide you.

How do I recruit an apprentice for my business?
If you would like to recruit an apprentice, simply get in touch with our Employer Training & Apprenticeships team to get the ball rolling. We will arrange a one-to-one with you to chat through all of your options and the programmes we have available. We offer a free apprentice recruitment service and will advertise your vacancy on the National Apprenticeship Website, GlosJobs and LinkedIn as well as on our live vacancies page. Our team will pre-screen and interview candidates before providing you with a shortlist of anonymised applicants. If your business has its own recruitment processes and policies, our team can support you with applicant days and interviewing, get in touch to discuss your requirements.

When can I recruit an apprentice?
Our construction and trade apprentice cohorts start every September and January. If you would like to recruit an apprentice, we recommend that you get in touch as soon as possible to we have plenty of time to advertise your vacancy.

When will my apprentice be able to start working on site / on customer projects?
Your apprentice will be with you from day one. Just like with any employee, they will need to be shown the ropes. Your apprentice will have weekly day release to college, growing their skills throughout their apprenticeship and will be able to start working on your site from week one.
