Nathan Morgan, Team Leader Apprentice at Gloucestershire College

What made you choose to do a leadership apprenticeship?

I had just completed my Level 2 in Catering, then I decided I wanted to further my career within the college. The best way for me to achieve this was to complete this management course, as it will enable me to help support, manage, motivate and develop my team.

Tell us about your job role and how your apprenticeship has helped you?

My job role involves managing my catering team and supplying a wide variety of food and drinks to the students and staff of Gloucestershire College. I work to tight deadlines and high standards to make sure everything is as good as it possibly can be. I am also in contact with suppliers and contractors as I order fresh food in daily. This apprenticeship has helped me endlessly within my job role from building relationships with customers to managing people where I learnt about how to complete an appraisal, which I then went on to complete for my team.

What key skills have your learnt through your apprenticeship?

I can honestly say I have learnt so much from completing this course but the main skills/techniques I have learnt are operational management and project management. These where two units within the course that I had no experience with at all, I studied hard to learn as much as I could and after finishing these units I was heavily involved in a project at work. This was a project on creating a website/app for the college so that we could offer a safe click & collect service from the canteen, by completing these units I had a great knowledge and understanding of projects work and run, so I was able to contribute a lot to this project, which benefited the team, myself and the college itself in multiple ways.

Have you felt supported by your tutor

Thankfully I’ve had Linda Campbell as my tutor throughout and she’s supported me amazingly through these challenging times, even while furloughed, by having regular Teams meetings and learning sessions to help me throughout the course.

What are your career ambitions for after you finish your apprenticeship?

I would like gain more experience in my position and when the time is right I would like to take the next step by obtaining the Level 5 Operations / Department Manager Apprenticeship at Gloucestershire College, this will help me further my career. I am thoroughly enjoying management and want to pursue it further and hopefully I will be able to do so in the future.

Would you recommend doing a leadership and management apprenticeship?

I would recommend this course to others as it helped me open my eyes to so much more that goes on within an organisation and the meanings of why certain things are done the way they are and I believe this course will give everyone all the knowledge that they would need within this field.

All our apprentices are assigned a tutor to mentor them through their apprenticeship

Linda Campbell, Leadership and Management Trainer and Assessor, commented: “Nathan has been a pleasure to tutor. He is enthusiastic and keen to develop in his role of Team Leader, Supervisor. When Nathan started the apprenticeship, he was new to the role of management and over the course of the programme I have witnessed him grow in knowledge, skills and behaviours. I have seen his knowledge and confidence go from strength to strength. He has the makings of a great team leader; he is motivated and focused on getting the best out of his team and support their development journeys while expanding his own. Nathan is on course for a distinction and I very much look forward to supporting his development going forward and celebrating his success.”

Amanda Kyle, Catering Operations Manager at Gloucestershire College said: “Nathan started his journey at our Forest campus as a catering assistant. He soon showed strong leadership skills and his abilities as a chef. When his line manager left, Nathan showed an interest in the position of catering supervisor. Nathan has thrived in this role. He has a great positive ‘can do’ attitude, he is approachable to staff and customers and well-liked by his peers.”
