Web Technology and Development

Media, Game and Software Development

Level 3

Course Overview

Full Time
Certificate

This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the fast-moving world of commercial web design and development.

Smartphone-sized screens, high-resolution displays, programming for web apps, these and many other  developments in computing technology have made web development one of the fastest growing and rapidly  changing areas of IT and computing.

So, what modern skills should you develop to succeed in a career or progression to university in this industry sector?

The answer is in the industry standard skills you will use on this course. You will create memorable, responsive displays using HTML5, CSS3 and write programs ranging from ecommerce shopping carts to animated games apps. To be prepared for the future, you will develop interfaces based on emerging techniques, for example, using artificial intelligence with user interaction.

"The range and quality of support for learners is very good. Support services are accessible and welcoming.” (Ofsted, 2013)

Modern technologies frequently required by employers, that you will use:

  • HTML5, CSS3, Javascript - core skills for creating and programming web sites and apps
  • Responsive Web Design - make your pages adapt to any screen size
  • PHP and MySQL - software development for more complex programs
  • UX Design - how to make the interface what the users need
  • jQuery, jQuery Mobile - use your software skills to “write less, do more”
  • CSS3 Transitions - create animations without the need for Javascript
  • Information Architecture - how to get exactly the right message on your pages

The Diploma in Web Technology and Development is a programme equivalent to studying three AS-Levels. Successful completion of the first year will enable you to progress onto the Extended Diploma. Completion of the Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 full A Levels and represents good progression for either work or Higher Education (e.g. Edexcel Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) or BSc Degree). Because it is a vocational programme it builds your practical skills, teaching you the knowledge you will need to become successful as a Commercial Website Developer. The college supports you by providing well-equipped labs and up to date computer systems with modern website development software such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop. Over the two years, you will study 18 units. You will receive details of the units at interview or induction. Typically, Diploma programmes have no formal exams, preferring to test your knowledge and understanding through a mixture of vocationally relevant assignments and projects. Assignments usually involve a high-degree of practical work although some will require you to complete background research before starting the task. Most assignments will involve you doing work outside scheduled classes although your lecturers are fully committed to give you support when you need it. You should expect to be studying outside of your College classes for at least 12 hours per week. There is an exam fee for BTEC Registration. You’ll need to pay for various materials, including a USB Memory stick, CD's and printed resources. You will have the opportunity to attend one or more course related day trips or activities during the year - a fee is charged at enrolment as a contribution towards these events.

  • A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*-C or 4 and above, including both maths and English. Or a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C including maths or English. Or an equivalent level 2 qualification in a relevant subject.

  • Upon completion, you may be able to move on to a higher education computing course. Alternatively, you may wish to seek employment within the industry as a junior website designer or graphic multimedia designer.

I studied at Wyedean School and Sixth Form where I took History, Maths, Computer Science and Physics for A Levels. My interest in cyber was sparked when I went on a CyberFirst Advanced residential course which I loved, so thought why not pursue cyber security as a career choice! If you have an interest in IT and problem solving, then definitely consider studying cyber.
