Student Stories

Katie Mawdesley

“My favourite thing about the course is that I can learn new skills on the job which will get me ready for work life. My goal is to be a pastry chef abroad and doing the apprenticeship is teaching me lots of transferable baking and pastry skills. The apprenticeship I chose is run through Gloucestershire College, so I come one day a week to the campus to do practical learning for my qualification. I chose the course as there was a baking unit which is something I really enjoy and want to do in later life as a job. My advice to students thinking of applying is to do something you have a passion for and love and don’t just do something because all your friends are doing it. After this course I want to move on to a more specific baking course to really learn my cooking niche.”

Level 2 - Catering

Jack

“I am enjoying the course as it’s really different to how school was, as I get to focus on one subject and get good at it. The staff treat all students with respect and that campus looks really cool and very modern compared to the rest of the area. I decided Gloucestershire College was the best option for me as it was close to home and close to the place I wanted to do work experience which is a big part of the course. I’m interested in barbering so the hairdressing course really appealed to me. My dream career is to open my own barbers. There’s quite a lot of career advice given and the opportunity to meet people that have opened their own barber’s and businesses so I feel like it is something I could do in the future. After I’ve finished my course I want to do 2 new hairdressing levels, which will be Colouring at the Forest Campus and then Barbering at the Cheltenham Campus.”

Level 2 - Hairdressing

Georgina Wilson

My aunty owns her own spa and really sparked my interest in the beauty industry. My dream is to become a Beauty Therapist and my course has taught me all of the skills needed, as well as how to be professional and confident. If you want to study a hands-on course, I would definitely recommend GC for its wide range of courses and facilities."

Level 2 – Beauty Therapy – Cheltenham Campus

Tom Davis

“I have autism and my school recommended I study my Level 1 and 2 qualifications at GC, alongside my GCSEs, because their own software was too outdated for what I wanted to study. I’m now studying full-time at GC and have made lots of friends and learnt loads. “I’ve been playing video games my whole life and have a burning desire to make one myself; I’d like to become a Video Games Designer or go into programming. After I complete this course, I plan to study Games Design at the University of Gloucestershire.”

Level 3 - Games Design

Gemma Parry

“I chose GC as I wanted to learn new skills from lecturers who have lots of experience in industry. I have developed great knife skills and become more familiar with different types of meat and fish; training in modern, well-equipped kitchens. I have built my confidence and made new friends, and learnt how to deal with pressure and time constraints in the kitchen during work experience at a local pub. I hope to bake cakes and desserts in my future career.”
