Green Skills at Gloucestershire College

Green skills are the knowledge and abilities needed to build a more sustainable, low-impact society. These essential skills are helping shape a future where both people and the planet thrive.

At Gloucestershire College, we’re committed to embedding green skills into our curriculum, starting with our GC Zero mission and expanding into our courses, starting with construction and trades.

Why we're starting with construction

Construction is one of the most important industries in Gloucestershire. Our state-of-the-art Construction Centre is already training the next generation with the latest sustainable techniques and tools.

From energy-efficient building design to eco-conscious materials and modern construction methods, our courses ensure students are learning what really matters, for today and tomorrow.

Why we're starting with construction

In 2018 we built our state-of-the-art, eco-friendly Forest of Dean campus. In 2021 we began our ambitious GC Zero project to deliver carbon zero campuses by 2030. As part of this we have decarbonised our heating system by investing £5m in heat pump and solar technology reducing our reliance on gas.

In 2023 we adapted our motor vehicle garages to provide EV training and more recently, we built our sustainable construction centre, offering evolving green skills courses to meet local employer demand.

We are now striving to embed green skills in every course, future-proofing our students with the knowledge and abilities to reduce the environmental impact of human activity. We’re adapting what we teach to make sure our students learn practical ways to work and live more sustainably and join a growing movement for a greener Gloucestershire.
