Apprenticeship reform - Understanding apprenticeship units

Apprenticeship reform: Understanding apprenticeship units
Apprenticeship reform: Understanding apprenticeship units

Following recent apprenticeship reforms, the government has announced seven new apprenticeship units that give employers greater flexibility to upskill their staff. Training can be funded using the Growth and Skills Levy (previously known as the Apprenticeship Levy).

What is an apprenticeship unit?

An apprenticeship unit is a short, flexible training course taken from an approved national apprenticeship standard. It enables employers to upskill their workforce more quickly by focusing on specific skill sets rather than committing to a full apprenticeship.

What apprenticeship units have been announced?

The new apprenticeship units include:

  • Welding
  • AI Leadership – developing AI strategy
  • Electric vehicle charging point installation and maintenance
  • Electrical fitting and assembly
  • Mechanical fitting and assembly
  • Permanent modular building assembly
  • Solar PV installation and maintenance

Who are they best suited for?

Employers looking to upskill their existing staff. Employees must be aged 19 and over.

Non-levy paying employers will be fully funded, while levy payers can use their levy funds.

When will these units be available?

As per the government plans, the first wave of fundable apprenticeship units will be launched in April 2026.

Why is it important?

For the first time, Levy-paying employers will have more flexibility in how they use their Levy to upskill their workforce. The change also ensures apprenticeships remain fit for purpose and prioritise value for money. The 7 units are part of the initial roll out, with more expected to follow as industry shapes future demand.

Next steps

We will have more information about delivering some of these units in April. In the meantime, we invite employers to connect with our Business Development team to express interest and discuss staff development options.
