Your Questions Answered – What are HTQs?
Your Questions Answered – What are HTQs?

We’re excited to add to our HTQ offer from September 2023. With courses now covering Computing, Technical Construction, and Healthcare, there are even more opportunities to specialise in your education and upskill for the career you want. But what is an HTQ?

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are new and existing level 4 and 5 technical qualifications approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education. They encompass higher national certificates (HNCs), higher national diplomas (HNDs) or foundation degrees that have been approved against occupational standards, decided by employers.

HTQ qualifications have been developed by awarding bodies in collaboration with employers and businesses so that you get the specific training, knowledge and skills required for your chosen career. After completing your HTQ in your chosen field, employers will regard you as highly employable.

There are many different types of HTQ, and that number is steadily growing! They’re a great alternative to apprenticeships or degrees, and are perfect if you’re looking for a more practical, career-led study programme.

What are the types of HTQ?

There are many different types of HTQs, including:

  • higher national diplomas
  • higher national certificates
  • foundation degrees
  • higher education diplomas

Not all higher national diplomas, higher national certificates, foundation degrees and higher education diplomas will be HTQs.

At GC we offer HTQs in:

Healthcare Professions’ Support HTQ

Construction and the Built Environment HTQ

Computing HTQ

Why study a HTQ?

HTQs are two-year qualifications designed to give you comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in your chosen area. Crucially, they allow you to specialise in your knowledge and prepare you for a specific career, meaning they’re a great stepping stone if you're looking for qualifications to start or advance your career.

See our course details for more information about the specialised routes available for each course.

Can I start an HTQ?

To start an HTQ, you’ll need to:

  • be aged 18 or over
  • live in England

You can apply for an HTQ while you’re still at school or college.

What are the entry requirements?

Each HTQ will have its own entry requirements, so the grades or qualifications you’ll need will depend on the type of course you’re applying for. You can check out our entry requirements on each course page.

What are the fees involved?

Tuition fees vary depending on the course. You may also be eligible for funding from student finance, grant or bursary. This will depend on your circumstances and the type of HTQ you’re studying.

Get in touch with our Student Services team to find out more.

Will there be work placements?

Work placements are not usually included on a HTQ.

However, many courses do offer you practical skills and experience through:

  • workshops
  • labs
  • work experience

Studying at GC means you will have access to our unrivalled connections to employers across the county. Don’t forget that our Employability Team are here to help if you’re looking for work experience whilst you study.

What happens after I complete a HTQ?

After completing a HTQ, you can start applying for jobs, or go on to further study and complete a degree – the choice is yours!
