There are many types of apprenticeships depending on the level you wish to study. Many apprenticeships offer pathways to progress onto a higher level course depending on your industry - so getting more informed about these potential avenues is key to your future career. 

You may be wondering what is a level 3 apprenticeship equivalent to or can you study a degree at apprenticeship level? Look no further as we've explained everything you need to know about the types of Intermediate, Advanced, Higher, and Degree apprenticeship levels.

How long does it take to complete an apprenticeship?

You'll encounter both on-the-job and off-the-job training while studying for your apprenticeship. On-the-job training requires you to be in the workplace where you'll be working with your employer. Off-the-job training is delivered at college, usually for 1 or 2 days a week.

Apprenticeships can take 1 to 4 years to complete. This is so you have enough time to gain the skills and complete for EPA (end point assessment).

Level 2 - Entry Level Apprenticeship

A Level 2 apprenticeship is considered equivalent to 5 GCSE course pass grades. A keen interest and enthusiasm for the industry you like will help you during the interview process. 

After completion, you can further progress your education and career by: 

• Remaining in full-time employment with your existing employer
• Progressing onto a Level 3 apprenticeship.
• Applying for jobs within your apprenticeship-specific industry.

Level 3 - Advanced Apprenticeship

A level 3 apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 A-level course passes. Many training providers require 5 GCSEs or more or a Level 2 apprenticeship standard qualification.

After completion, you can further progress your education and career by: 

• Remaining in full-time employment with your existing employer
• Progressing onto a degree-level apprenticeship with either your existing or a new employer.
• Applying for jobs within your apprenticeship-specific industry.

Levels 4 & 5 - Higher Apprenticeships

A level 4 apprenticeship is equivalent to a foundation degree or a Higher National Certificate (HNC). The entry requirements for this level are more difficult for learners, however, there are many support services available to help you.

After completion, you can further progress your education and career by:

A Level 5 apprenticeship is equivalent to a full degree. Despite the requirements being similar to level 4, employers will be looking for more advanced learners and a specific set of skills.

Upon completion, you can further progress your education and career by:

• Progressing onto a level 6 or 7-degree level apprenticeship with your existing or a new employer.
• Applying for a new job within your apprenticeship-specific industry.
• Studying at university for a higher degree level is available in your industry field.

Levels 6 & 7 - Degree Level Apprenticeships

A level 6 apprenticeship allows learners to gain a full bachelor's degree. A level 7 apprenticeship will give learners the opportunity to gain a master's degree.
