Apprenticeships are a great way to break into an industry you're interested in so getting off to a strong start will help kick start your future career. We have compiled a list of top tips to help you on your way to finding an apprenticeship and succeeding while on the job.

1. Do your research

Nobody wants to work in a career they don’t enjoy, take some time to do research in the industry you'd like to study an apprenticeship. There's no point in doing something you don't enjoy and there is support to help you make an informed decision before starting. You can speak to our apprenticeships team who can go through what to expect and the type of employer you might be working with - just remember you do an apprenticeship in something you're interested in!

2. Ask valuable questions

As an apprentice, you are there to learn while you earn to develop the skills you'll need in your chosen field. If you need help or advice, ask your colleagues or mentor who can give you support from their previous experiences.

Research shows that asking more questions helps build emotional intelligence, which can lead to a stronger skill set; this is key when progressing to a leadership role and building relationships in your team. Not only this, asking questions is a great way to connect and communicate with your peers. Remember you are there to learn so every question is valued.

3. Let your enthusiasm shine through

In any role, it’s completely normal to enjoy certain aspects of your job more than others. However, it is important to remember you are just starting in your apprenticeship career so bringing your spark to the workplace will help you settle in. A positive attitude to daily tasks will set you on the right path and make you a valued team player.

4. How to organise my time as an apprentice?

Apprenticeships can be fast-paced, not only will you be expected to juggle various work commitments; you need to ensure you set aside enough time each week to complete your assignments. If you are concerned you have not been given enough allocated time by your employer to complete your college work, speak with your dedicated apprenticeship expert who will be more than happy to help.

5. Stay social, responsibly

Social media sites are a great way to follow your favourite brands, keep in touch with friends and even shop. However, social media is also a tool used by employers to screen applications and recruit. Research shows that those aged 16-24 can lose potential job offers due to comments or pictures they have shared online. Remember, your digital footprint will be out there forever, so it is important to regularly review your privacy settings and think twice before you post.

6. Make use of your support network

When you start an apprenticeship with us, you will have access to all of our campus facilities, whether that be the library, canteen, or even the gym. Not only this, you will be paired with an apprenticeship assessor who will make regular visits to your workplace, to ensure you are on track and offer a means of support as and when you may need it.

It is important to seek support and help when you need it so speaking to your assessor and mentor is an important step to doing well in your apprenticeship and starting your future career!

There are so many other ways you can make the most of your apprenticeship; however, we hope you have enjoyed our top six tips to help you ace your qualification. We can't wait to see you succeed!
