Work in the exciting world of media make-up and become a professional make-up artist! This course is the perfect first step if you’re passionate about make up and creativity. You’ll get hands-on learning as you explore the art of applying make-up, creative techniques, and basic hair artistry. Working in our professional studios, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use professional products and tools and gain the skills to move into the next level of make-up artistry.
What you’ll learn
In our dedicated Make Up Studio you’ll learn a variety of techniques, from basic make-up to photographic make-up using different lighting.
The course covers:
- Applying basic make-up through to fashion make-up
- Informing clients how to improve their make up applications
- Face and upper body art design and application
- Basic photographic make-up and different lighting techniques
- Basic hair skills including hair ups and dressing hair to compliment makeup
- Creating an image based on a theme
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Health and Safety working practices
You’ll develop your skills in consultation, giving pre and after treatment advice using a variety of professional makeup brands. You’ll also practice on your peers, and you may book in clients to build on your new skills. As in a professional studio, you’ll be expected to give your clients the highest possible customer care and portray a professional image.
Plus, you'll have the chance to work on exciting projects, gain real experience at college shows and events, and build your confidence for your next step.
Highlights
You’ll get the chance to take part in external events such as:
- Helping at local theatres or local theatre groups
- Photoshoots working along our photography students or with external employers
- Fashions show working with other students, as well as events such as local charities and fundraisers
- Demos and talks from industry specialists, including local make up artists and photographers
- Trips to local universities to look at progression possibilities and masterclasses
Assessment
Assessment includes a combination of written assignments and projects, coursework and homework tasks. You’ll take end of year exams which are both practical and theoretical. You’ll also create a portfolio of evidence which can be used to progress onto other courses or for potential employment opportunities.
Anything else?
You’ll be expected to source your own models for mock assessments and final exams to encourage working on lots of different faces in readiness for industry.
At Gloucestershire College we want students to develop their English and Maths skills so that they achieve their learning goals and future career aims. For this reason, all full-time students (16-18) who have not achieved grade 4 or above English language or maths GCSE will study these subjects as part of their course.
You’ll also develop additional employability and work-based skills through our Which Three Skills programme. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, commitment and an ability to communicate effectively.
