Plans unveiled for new electrical engineering provision at Gloucestershire College in Cheltenham

24 June 2019

Gloucestershire College has announced plans to open a brand new electrical engineering facility at its Cheltenham campus from September this year.

The news follows their successful bid to become an Institute of Technology in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), which will provide investment of up to £3 million into Advanced Engineering and Cyber facilities at the College.

The centre, which will house state-of-the-art electrical engineering workshops including Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) equipment, will provide a central training facility for the sector and businesses in the area.

Mike Lawson, Director of Technology and Engineering at the College will be overseeing the project and commented, “We are extremely pleased to be in the position to invest in these brand new facilities to support the continued growth of electrical engineering in the region. We are confident the new labs will allow us to continue our work with local engineering firms, providing them with high-quality training and apprenticeships that add real value to their business. We also look forward to creating new partnerships with Cheltenham businesses who have a need for talented electronic engineers.”

The new facilities will provide an excellent learning environment the College’s two new degree apprenticeships in Electronics, and Electronic and Computing Engineering, which have been developed in partnership with UWE Bristol to train engineers to degree standard.

These degrees will complement the College’s existing offering which includes apprenticeships from Level 2 up to higher level, as well as part-time BTECs and HNCs.

Businesses who would like further information on engineering courses available at the College are encouraged to contact the GC Business Hub on 01452 563400 or email business.hub@gloscol.ac.uk.
