Congratulations to our award-winning staff

23 November 2017

Each year, Gloucestershire College celebrates the achievements and dedication of its staff members at our annual Staff Awards. With over 1,000 members of full- and part-time staff working across our three campuses, it's a real honour to be nominated for an award.

The awards ceremony also allows the College the opportunity to thank our local business partners who very kindly sponsor the event and prizes. This year, our headline sponsor, and sponsor of two award categories, Harrison Clark Rickerbys, along with gbsolutions, Barnwood Construction, Protocol and Aim Higher Leadership were invited to attend the awards ceremony.

As well as all awards being open for GC staff to nominate freely, we had a special award this year which was open only to students. Our Student's Choice Award gives students the opportunity to share the positive impact staff have had on their learning experience and development.

On Friday 17 November, staff, sponsors and VIP guests gathered in our Number One Restaurant at Cheltenham Campus, greeted by a champagne reception before being welcome by Chair of the Board of Governors, Trish Burton, and being served a delicious three-course dinner prepared and served by our Catering and Hospitality students. Following the meal, our Principal and Chief Executive, Matthew Burgess, welcomed our Master of Ceremonies, Jenny Jones, to the stage to begin the presentation of awards.

"Our eight sponsored categories showcase a variety of employee contributions; whether an impact has been made through interactions with students or colleagues, or perhaps through the development of a new system, programme or initiative, it is all valued.

This year we have received over 200 nominations from across the College, and I am please to see so many colleagues recognising and appreciating the contributions of others, as well as a fantastic response from students for the Students' Choice Award" - Matthew Burgess, GC Principal and Chief Executive

The first award of the evening, the Student Experience Champion award, recognised an outstanding contribution to the educational environment of GC as well as support for the diversity of student needs. Nominees for this award were: Caroline Davies, NCS Interim Manager; Marc Bennett, Chef Lecturer; and Nicky Marriott, Lecturer in Travel and Tourism.

And the winner is... Caroline Davies.

The second award for the Customer Service Champion recognised employees who consistently go ‘above and beyond’ to deliver exceptional customer service to students, guests or businesses contacting the College. Nominees for this award were: Alethea Bumpstead, Timetables and Registers Administrator; Emma Roberts, HR Systems Project Coordinator; and Lauren Jones, Student Support Adviser.

And the winner is… Emma Roberts.

The Students’ Choice Award is the only award of the evening which is solely nominated by our students to the member of staff, whether support or academic, that they feel have made a true impact on them and the student body during their time at college. Nominees for this award were: Fran Pierce, Learning Resources Adviser; George Risbey, Lecturer in Foundation Studies; and Katherine White, Catering Technician.

And the winner is… Fran Pierce.

The Teacher of the Year Award is open to all academic staff, and recognises an individual who places innovative, high quality teaching and learning at the heart of everything they do; an inspiration to staff and students alike. Nominees for this award were: Claire Mann, Lecturer in Graphic Design; Mikey Stevens, Lecturer in English; and Loraine Lloyd, Lecturer in Plumbing.

And the winner is… Claire Mann.

The next award of the evening, the Rising Star Award, was open to any employee who has been with the College for less than three years, and who, in that time, had created or recognised an opportunity to substantially develop and grow in their role while having a positive impact on students and colleagues across the College. Nominees for this award were: Sarah Dalby, Head of Business Intelligence; Roxanne Varnham, Learning Mentor; and Hannah Grainger, Senior Marketing Executive.

And the winner is… Hannah Grainger.

The Employer Focus Champion Award celebrates not only a person who has been committed to strengthening the College’s links to external businesses, but also highlights how much GC works with businesses in the county to benefit our students and staff. Nominees for this award were: Mark Hyde Catton, Chef Lecturer; Diana Phillips, Assessor in Marketing; and Alison Allen, Student Development Manager.

And the winner is… Mark Hyde Catton, who received the loudest cheer of the night as our Catering and Hospitality students joined us for the presentation following the meal.

Our final two awards of the evening are the highest in their accolade, and recognise an individual and a team who have been outstanding in their support of the College, its staff and students, and who constantly excel to make the College a better place for all.

The first award for the Employee of the Year saw nominees of: Maggie Aleksyeyeva, Student Programmes Administrator; Barry Evans, Curriculum Administrator; and Claire Radtke, Performance Monitoring Coordinator.

And the winner is… Claire Radtke.

The second of these awards was awarded for the Team of the Year, which celebrates a team or collection of individuals. Nominees for this category were: Foundation Studies, Exams and Motor Vehicle.

And the winning team is… Exams.

The Staff Awards is just one reminder of how dedicated a team we have working at Gloucestershire College, whether they are academic lecturers, support staff or a member of an internal department, and the night was thoroughly enjoyed by all – staff, sponsors and guests alike.
