Fly through the new forest campus

16 November 2017

Gloucestershire College is thrilled to provide prospective students, parents and the local community with an exclusive insight into what the new Forest of Dean Campus will look like, in a flythrough available at

The vision for the contemporary new campus boasts big open-plan spaces; purpose-built, commercial facilities and workshops; a unique touchdown for large groups and presentations; panoramic views over the stunning Steam Mills lake, and a clear belonging with its rural surroundings.

The heart of the campus will embody a community street; a large central space for work and play, lined with commercial ‘buildings’ such as a salon and restaurant. While the colour scheme and wooden features will reflect the beauty of the Forest of Dean.

Forming part of the wider Cinderford Northern Quarter regeneration project, the campus will be environmentally friendly, easily accessible by car and regular bus services, and packed full of state-of-the-art facilities including construction workshops, new art and creative studios, a commercial training restaurant and a Graduations hair and beauty salon.

The flythrough was created by award-winning, architects’ practice Roberts Limbrick; the firm selected to design and deliver the campus concept.

Ben Harries, Senior Associate at Roberts Limbrick, said: “The basic concept for the campus is of two wings, each alive with their own separate activities, sitting either side of a central unifying ‘street’ where students of all disciplines can meet, socialise and feel involved in the wider student community.

“At the end of the ‘street’ are the dining and library, where extensively glazed, curved walls provide panoramic lakeside views. Vertical timber cladding is used externally and internally in reference to the forest setting, whilst a feature pod will sit over the reception area, providing a striking feature and enhancing the sense of arrival.

“Studying at a vocational college is what ultimately gave me the confidence and initial skills to pursue my career as an architect. It is therefore a privilege to have been involved in this project, which will transform the lives of a great number of young people in the Forest of Dean area. Furthermore, as a Gloucestershire practice which believes firmly in developing local talent, this project is very close to all our hearts here at Roberts Limbrick.”

Campus Principal, Sandra Tyrrell, said: “We’re very excited to unveil what the new Forest of Dean Campus will look like, to give the community something tangible to look forward to.

“The building work is going to plan and we are hitting all of the planned milestones to date, with excitement building for our staff and students too. Our catering students will even be taking some mince pies out to the builders before they take a well-earned break for Christmas.

“As the only further education college in the area, the new Forest of Dean Campus will offer the full range of post-16 professional, technical and creative courses for young people, whether they want to progress on to university or directly into employment.

“New courses for 2018 include the Level 3 Business Extended Diploma, Level 2 Colouring Services, Entry Level Discover Work Skills and Levels 1 and 2 Multiskills – as well as our more established and popular courses and apprenticeships.”
