GC House Blog 13. We passed our assessment!

6 March 2017

Last week we were thrilled to find out that we have passed our National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) Assessment, which means we are now able to sign off our own electrical work. This also gives us 'Approved Contractor' status and potentially means we can work on commercial properties in the future.

Particular thanks and praise should go to our Electrical Lecturer, Artur, who was challenged on his knowledge, experience and practices in the assessment, as well as Curriculum Leader, Phil Butcher, for this achievement.

Wales and West Utilities also paid us a visit last week, to move the gas meter from the garage to the outside wall, which will facilitate our plans to turn the garage into a dining room and add more living space. We have already begun this process by bricking up a doorway and two windows, and next we will be knocking through the kitchen wall to open it up and create a lovely kitchen diner. Our carpentry students will be building a suspended timber floor once the garage door has been bricked up and the window is in.

We've continued digging up more of the driveway ready for Western Power to come and move our supply. Digging is underestimated work and ibuprofen has been needed to help with the aches and pains afterwards!

Our apprentice Harry is settling into his role and his work is of a high standard. He was even featured as a video blogger in the College's National Apprenticeship Week activities! Watch his blog here.

Future plans

  • Following our visit from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), there is much interest in how our approaches can support the industry.
  • Our Project Manager, Rachael, was asked to speak at the Gloucestershire Constructing Excellence meeting about the GC renovation projects.
  • We are planning to launch 'try before you buy' events, for construction companies looking to hire staff

We continue to receive support from local merchants, Howdens, Nicks Timber and Buildbase, to whom we are very grateful. If you are a local company who would like to get involved with our projects in some way, please contact: rachael.capener@gloscol.ac.uk
