Double Celebration for Graduating Couple at GC Higher Awards Ceremony
This year’s Higher Awards Ceremony for higher education graduates of Gloucestershire College, was extra special for Helen and Daryl Jenkins
It was a double celebration for the married couple, who both received Foundation Degree certificates in Therapeutic Counselling, at the November ceremony in Gloucester Cathedral. The day was made even more special by the fact it was also their one year wedding anniversary.
43-year-old Helen said: “I’m delighted to be graduating alongside my husband today - a year after our wedding too!
“Our story is a little unusual - I completed my foundation degree at Gloucestershire College in 2013, and in the same year, met Daryl. He’d been thinking about a change in career and after hearing about my experience, decided to study the same Therapeutic Counselling course, which he completed with a merit this year.
“I didn’t attend my own graduation, but when Daryl was invited to attend this year, we enquired as to whether I could graduate alongside him. We were delighted that the answer was yes!”
Since completing her training at GC, Helen has worked for the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme, Let’s Talk, the Terrance Higgins Trust, and is now a Sexual Health Counsellor for the NHS.
Daryl now hopes to forge a new career in counselling with his newly acquired qualification. He was lucky enough to receive guidance from highly qualified teaching staff including GC Higher Education Curriculum Leader, Paul Daniel. Paul also retrained as a counsellor and set up a private practice, following a career in IT.
He said: “I believe that our training changes lives for the better - students on our counselling courses develop into safe, ethical and effective counsellors, who help people with a range of mental health issues.
“Our Counselling Department has an excellent reputation with agencies, our students are sought after for placements and we consistently receive positive feedback on them.”
