Gloucestershire College celebrated a successful night at the 2016 Gloucestershire Apprenticeship Awards, with wins in two categories.

The College was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships Award, for its long standing work with employers and young people to develop and grow apprenticeships in the county.

Currently working with more than 650 employers to train almost 1,000 apprentices across 17 industry sectors, the College’s dedicated Business Hub is well placed to respond to the growing demand for apprenticeship training, from introductory traineeships to higher level apprenticeships.

Julie Tegg, Head of Work Based Learning, said: “Everyone at Gloucestershire College is immensely proud of our apprenticeship programmes, the commitment and enthusiasm our staff have and the excellent outcomes we achieve.

“We are always identifying and developing new ways to raise the profile of apprenticeships throughout the county and we work closely with employers to develop new and existing apprenticeships that meet their needs.

“We are very proud to have received this this award.”

GC Motor Vehicle Apprentice Luke Hands was also crowned Outstanding Apprentice of the Year (Services Industries) at the glitzy ceremony, held in the Gold Cup Suite at Cheltenham Racecourse. The 20-year-old is two years into completing his Level 3 Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship at Clarkson Evans, one of the largest electrical contractors in the country.

Luke said: “I didn’t do well at school, getting D’s in most of my GCSEs, but I realised I’d been given a real chance to develop a long-term career when I became an apprentice mechanic at Clarkson Evans.

“Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be a mechanic; I’ve always been really practical and loved playing with Lego Technic and Meccano when I was growing up. After doing a week’s work experience shadowing a mechanic, I knew it was the job for me.

“I’m really proud to say I work for Clarkson Evans and plan to stay here after I qualify, hopefully eventually becoming the workshop supervisor.”

Luke attends Gloucestershire College one day a week and spends four days in the company’s workshop, carrying out vehicle repairs and MOT checks. His apprenticeship also involves going out on the road to perform on-the-spot urgent repairs.

His manager at Clarkson Evans said: “Luke is mature beyond his years and a real asset to the vehicle workshop at Clarkson Evans. He really stepped up to the plate when his old boss left suddenly and didn’t panic when he had to take on extra responsibility for a few weeks.

“It’s Luke’s understanding of how his role impacts on the rest of the company that impresses me the most. Nothing is too much trouble and he really appreciates that vans off the road affect our service delivery. Time is money to our electricians – Luke understands this and regularly puts himself out to help others.”

The 2016 Gloucestershire Apprenticeship Awards were hosted by the Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo on Thursday 7 July, in celebration of the achievements of apprentices across a wide range of businesses, trades and professions. Gloucestershire College has been the proud headline sponsor for five years running.

On winning the award, Luke said: “I was over the moon when I found out I had won and felt like all the hard work had paid off. I think I was chosen because I put my all into every job that I do and I don’t shy away from hard work.”
