GC wins national AoC This Girl Can competition
Gloucestershire College is thrilled to have been selected as the winner of the Association of Colleges This Girl Can photo competition, with an image of a sport student boxing which celebrates and inspires young women in sport.
17-year-old Savanna Lee from Cheltenham, a former Barnwood Park pupil, is currently studying Level 3 Sport at the College’s Gloucester Campus and is very involved in activities with GC Sports Academies. Savanna is pictured striking a strong boxing pose in the campus’ on-site fitness suite, which is available for all GC students to use.
Savanna said: “I was really excited to be part of the College’s campaign. I love sport and think it’s important to get girls involved where they can.”
The national competition was launched in partnership with Sport England to give colleges and students a chance to share inspiring photos of them taking part in sport and physical activity, and support the national #ThisGirlCan campaign.
Not only did the College win the competition, it also came runner-up with another image of 17-year-old Laura Taylor, from Lydney, who is also a sport student at Gloucester Campus. The former Dean Academy pupil is pictured having a great time playing golf under the guidance of Academy Coach Christopher Gardner.
Laura said: “I play sport for enjoyment and recently have taken up CrossFit and weightlifting. They’re great for my all-round fitness and has helped with my college netball too.”
Both images will now be used by the Association of Colleges in future national campaigns to promote college sport.
Will Merivale, Sports Academies Coordinator, added: “We’re thrilled to have won the national AoC This Girl Can competition. Last year 34% of our students taking part in college activities were female – 4% above the national average – and we strive to continue to increase this. This is a fantastic campaign and I’m proud Savanna and Laura were happy to represent us.”
Gloucestershire College encourages all students to keep fit with GC Active across its three main campuses in Gloucester, Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean, and aims to make physical activity fun and accessible for them.
In addition to the Gloucester fitness suite and GC Gym in Cheltenham, there is a full schedule of sports activities for all students to get involved in, including football, basketball, rugby, yoga, volleyball, squash, mountain biking and much more.
