Students reach national finals of iDEA
A group of Gloucestershire College students has reached the national finals of iDEA – the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Awards – with a downloadable digital magazine based around the life of YouTube.
Team YouMag, comprised of graduating Level 3 Media Production students Luke Baille, aged 18, Jack Mason, aged 20, and Joe Edwards, aged 18 – all from Cheltenham – is one of 10 finalists in the running to win a cash injection of £15,000 to further develop its magazine into a successful business start-up.
The live final is being held at Heron Tower in London today, Wednesday 15th October, before all finalists head to Buckingham Palace for the winner’s ceremony and official launch of iDEA, hosted by His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG Patron of the Nominet Trust.
iDEA is a new scheme launched this year by The Duke of York and Nominet Trust, to identify, support and inspire the next generation of digital entrepreneurs.
Team YouMag decided to develop the business its students first pioneered as part of their course in 2013, and entered iDEA after winning a regional business competition. Each of the 10 iDEA finalists received a £5,000 investment and mentoring, which they have used to create their prototypes.
Three finalists will be selected today to receive a further £15,000 investment and six months’ support from industry experts.
Gazelle Project Co-ordinator, Deborah Piper, said: “The YouMag team reflects the success that GC students, who choose to be part of Enterprise whilst studying, are having. We’re thrilled with how far the students have come and hope to see them receive the investment and support they deserve.”
