English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

Our English language courses are available part-time or full-time, from one week to a full academic year, for work, study or pleasure. Our year-round teachers are all qualified, experienced and highly committed to delivering well-planned and challenging lessons, and all our summer school teachers are qualified too.

Based at the Cheltenham campus, you will be studying in the Languages Department with access to the International Learning Gateway with its own computer facilities for self-study and research. We have a wide range of books in our modern college library (and an extensive digital library resource) to support your learning and help develop your English language skills. There is also free WiFi throughout the college.

We assess your English writing, grammar, speaking and comprehension on your first day to establish your English level and your aims in studying English. This enables us to place you in the best classes for your language level.

We offer classes from level A1 (Elementary) to C1 (Advanced) with a maximum class size of 16 (and usually an average of 10). Levels are described using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - an international standard for describing language ability. Courses include regular homework, progress assessment and tutorial support.

We are also a Cambridge authorised examination center and offer the following Cambridge examinations: PET, FCE, CAE, CPE (subject to numbers) on site in December and June.

There are 2 or 3 excursions per term to other UK cities (such as London, Oxford and Stratford) or attractions, as well as college-wide events and facilities which you can enjoy during your stay.
