Ideal if: you want a high degree of knowledge surrounding a range of public services skills.

You’ll learn: outdoor education studies and expedition skills; leadership and teamwork; citizenship and diversity; and crime and its effects on society.

Expect: to benefit from our great links with local public services; you’ll get the chance to go on riot training with the police and to meet the Marines and RAF.

You’ll love: our enrichment opportunities, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, plus a range of additional public service trips and residential's.

This course aims to provide you with the specialist knowledge, skills and understanding relating to the uniformed services in areas such as leaderships skills, physical fitness and equality diversity and inclusion, which can be applied to current or future employment in a variety of roles. The content has been developed with employers, subject experts and tutors to ensure that it's relevant to the real world and meets the needs of the employers.

 

You also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications and awards such as first aid and Duke of Edinburgh award.

You will study a range of topics including:

  • Preparing for a career in a chosen uniformed service
  • Develop aspects of physical fitness for entry to the uniformed services
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion

We aim to get you as involved as much as possible with real public service activities and events, ranging from Pre- Royal Marine Course training weeks, riot training with Gloucestershire police right through to multi- service emergency incident exercises.

In the second year we will support the students in planning for their next steps- whether this is into Higher Education or starting the application process for their chosen public service. It is in this year that we expect to see the students start taking personal challenges- whether this is progressing onto their Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh award or working in the community as volunteers.

The course has many practical activities and students must attend these sessions wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.

You will need to complete relevant work placement as part of your course. You will have support whilst at College to arrange this but it is advised to start thinking about it prior to enrolment.

  • Typical Entry Criteria

    • Five GCSE subjects at Grade 4 and above including:

      • GCSE English Language or Literature at Grade 4 and above or GCSE Maths at Grade 4 and above
      • Four other GCSE subjects at Grade 4 and above

    Gloucestershire College welcome any other/combinations of relevant qualifications that are comparable and/or equivalent to the typical course entry requirements.

    For 19+ applicants that do not have recognised qualifications may still meet course entry requirements through alternative methods of assessment at the College’s discretion.

    All queries regarding course entry criteria including the equivalency of qualifications and exceptional extenuating circumstances should be directed by email to the Admissions Department through applications@gloscol.ac.uk.

  • Upon completion, you may move on to the Foundation Degree in Uniformed Public Services or other higher education courses in public services. You may also seek employment directly in industry. *course is subject to validation.

The sport and recreation industry is an increasingly popular area of study, providing employment opportunities in sports development, sports coaching, fitness and related areas. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a range of practical and theory modules, learning from industry experts.

Uniformed Public Services

GC offers a wide range of real emergency service and armed forces experiences as part of the uniformed public services course. This has led to many former students going on to join the emergency services (Police, Fire and Ambulance Service) and the armed forces (Army, RAF or the Royal Navy) upon successful completion of their course.

I’ve always wanted to do something to help the community and being in the police interested me, so I applied to study UPS at GC after a friend recommended it to me. I’ve formed really close friendships with my class through the team-building activities we do on the course. My dream is to work in the police and specialise in firearms; I’m considering going to university but ideally would like to go straight into the police once I complete my course.
