Mechanical Engineering - Technical Route

Level 3
Gloucester

Course Overview

Full Time
Certificate

Ideal if you want to gain a broad understanding of mechanical engineering.

You’ll learn mechanical principles and applications, drawing/CAD, CNC (Computer Numerical Control), health and safety, maths for engineers and material science.

Expect to gain the practical skills and knowledge to work in an environment requiring a high level of technical skill and responsibility.

You’ll love the opportunity to get involved in the annual WorldSkills UK CAD competition and visit local companies.

At level 3 you will have two options to choose from in your engineering training; the City & Guilds (Craft) route which will be a continuation from City & Guilds Level 2 while the BTEC Level 3 (Technical) route will be the next step after your GCSEs or equivalent.

Both of our level 3 Mechanical Engineering Diploma courses, are delivered in well-equipped teaching rooms making this a great place to learn about a wide variety of subjects and topic areas.  The subjects studied will give you a very good grounding and are delivered in both a theoretical and practical way.  The equipment used in the rooms are industry standard and most of the software/simulation packages used are the same as those used in industry.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies provides you with a solid base on which to build in preparation for your exciting journey in becoming a qualified Engineer. It enables you to gain an industry recognised technical qualification and is designed to cater for both part time (generally apprentices) and full time students. It will usually take 2 years to achieve.  It is equivalent to 1.5 or 3 A levels and accredits UCAS points.

This qualification will give you a sound understanding of the technical aspects of Mechanical Engineering and can lead on to higher level qualifications such as an HNC/D and/or a University Degree.

You will use our specialist facilities, a fully equipped CAD suite using Solidworks® Premium boasting both mechanical modelling and drawing along with full simulation such as finite element analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).  Our students are eligible to have this software package licensed for home use and so nothing will get in your way!

You’ll study a range of topics including Mechanical Principles,  Maths for Engineers, Materials Science, Health and Safety, Engineering Drawing/CAD and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) to name a few.

The qualification can be obtained by completing assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will expand your knowledge to work in an environment requiring a high level of skill and responsibility.  We have fantastic links to local industries and will help you to gain useful work experience.

You can study at this level full time over two years,

    Student Stories

    Millie Keddie

“I’ve always enjoyed being hands-on and practical. Mechanical engineering is not all theory based; there is lots of opportunity to solve problems by making things, and perfecting them in your own way. There’s a stereotype that engineering is a man’s job. I love the industry, I don’t care about the stereotype. It’s not a man’s job and it doesn’t matter what gender you are, you can do anything if your heart is in it."

    Tom Chapman

"I’m studying at GC because my employer, Unilever, thought it would be a good course for me to attend to expand my knowledge. As a maintenance engineer, the HNC course allows me to expand my knowledge and help progression in my career. The equipment is decent and mimics the workplace, so skills can easily translate. The electrical lecturers are good too, and I’ve received great support."

    Sylvester Ghanney

"I've always been interested in engineering and took the decision to study at Gloucestershire College to gain additional qualifications, alongside my job as a Service Engineer. My lecturers were superb; always willing to help and very supportive to those who want to learn. The equipment is perfect too."
