Art and Design Foundation Diploma

  • Students

Ideal if: you've completed your A Levels or a relevant Level 3 course, and you'd like to explore many areas of art and design before choosing an area in which to specialise.

You'll learn: drawing, fine art, painting and elements of sculpture, fashion textiles and surface design, graphic design and illustration, photography, printmaking and contextual studies.

Expect to: develop a great and broad portfolio of work that can support your application to a higher education course, to start your own business or enter employment.

You'll love: dedicated studio space five days a week to work on projects and live assignment briefs.  As well as our iMac suites and close links with artists in the industry.

This is an intensive one-year, post A Level or level 3 course, which gives you the opportunity to explore the many areas of art and design in the first term before choosing an area in which to specialise for the rest of the course.

"Teachers are well qualified and experienced; they are passionate about their subject and impart their knowledge and understanding with enthusiasm.” (Ofsted, 2016)

The course is geared towards the preparation of a portfolio of work to support your application to an advanced course - or in gaining employment. Throughout the course your practical studio work will be supported by a programme of studies in the history of art and design. This course demands a high degree of discipline and self-motivation. The course gives you a broad foundation across a wide range of disciplines in art, design and media, before you explore an area that interests you in much greater detail. You will have a dedicated studio workspace for you to come into college five days a week for the year.

    Your studies may include:

    • Life drawing, fine art: painting and sculpture

    • Fashion textiles and surface design

    • Graphic design and illustration

    • Photography

    • Printmaking

    • Contextual Studies.
