Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistant

Level 2
Cheltenham Gloucester

Course Overview

Part Time

This course prepares you for your first steps in a career as a Teaching Assistant in schools. It gives you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required for the job. It is for those who wish to become, or are newly employed as a teaching assistant.

You will need to have a school placement for a minimum of six hours a week and attend a session in College each week.

You will be responsible for obtaining and paying for your own DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check through your school placement. It is important to apply for this as soon as possible.

Our Level 2 is an excellent opportunity for students to find out about jobs in the sector and make direct contacts.  Many students have gained employment through this qualification.

Comments from learners

It was the perfect course for me and gave me the confidence in my ability in returning to work. I thank the tutor for everything.

The tutor has been extremely helpful, approachable and full of knowledge at all times. Fantastic leadership and delivery of the subject. Thank you!

There are a number of options available at GC to help you pay for your course fees:

  • Setting up a Direct Debit: You’ll be asked for a 20% deposit when you enrol and this can be paid in cash or by debit or credit card. Course fees must be paid in full by the end of your course so the monthly instalments would be adjusted accordingly e.g. for a one year course you would make 8 payments;
  • Support for those that are unemployed and in receipt of benefits. Contact Student Services to find out if this course is eligible for funding and if you are eligible.

Class times:

Gloucester September intake:

     Tuesdays 10:15am-2:30pm

Cheltenham January intake:

     Mondays 10:15am–2:30pm

  • You must be aged over 19 at the start of the academic year.

Entry to the course is subject to satisfactory completion of an online Professional Course Assessment and attendance to a mandatory briefing session to assess your suitability.

You will need to demonstrate a good standard of English language and ability to work at the required level for this course.

You must also have secured a school placement of at least six hours a week.

  • On successful completion of Level 2, you may progress on to the Level 3 Certificate. We generally find that a significant number of candidates gain employment in schools, alongside their studies for this course.

Student Stories

“I started by doing an apprenticeship through GC in motor vehicle. I then went on as a technician and was supported by GC to become a lecturer at the college. “I enjoyed being in a group of like-minded people most at the college, which provided lots of conversations about best teaching practices. I learnt a lot and felt very supported. “The course has enabled me to teach in a modern day classroom and have been given a great learning environment. After my course has finished I want to look into management courses so I can progress on to the next level of my career.”
