Message from the Principal

Welcome back after your Easter break and I hope you are all ready to re-engage with your online/distance learning, following the extension of the lockdown by the Government.

We continue to be guided by the Department for Education and Public Health England, and our campuses remain closed at present. Our staff, however, are working hard to ensure learning can continue from home and there is online support also available for those who need it.

There will be a range of short courses available soon for adults to continue their studies and professional development at home; the details of which will be announced over the next week.

I would like to thank our students and their parents for their patience and understanding during this uncertain time, as well as my staff, whose dedication to their students and their own work ethic is nothing short of admirable.

I trust that together, into the new summer term and beyond, we will all continue to learn, develop and support our students and partners.

Assessment of students and qualifications

You may have seen in the news that your vocational or technical qualification is going to be awarded in a similar way to A Levels and GCSEs. In fact, final decisions on how assessments will work have not been made for all qualifications.

Whilst many qualifications due to be completed in this academic year will be awarded through calculated grades, the Department for Education - who will make the final decision - recognise that with such a wide range of vocational and technical qualifications, different approaches will be required for different qualifications. We expect them to publish their approach in the next few weeks.

We appreciate that this is an unsettling time, but until the specifics are confirmed we do not want to provide incorrect information, so will be in contact with all students as soon as we have definite answers.

It is, therefore, important in the meantime that you continue to engage with and complete the activities and assessments set by your tutors. Read more here.

Suspected cases of Coronavirus

Students

If you are unable to study because you are unwell or showing symptoms please continue to contact curriculumadministrators@gloscol.ac.uk AND your Course Leader AND Head of School. Please confirm your course and student reference number in your email.

Staff

During this period of working from home, staff should continue to inform us when they are self-isolating due to suspected/confirmed Coronavirus in their household by emailing: HR@gloscol.ac.uk

We are here to support you

I also want to take this opportunity to pay credit to our students who have responded to these challenging times with maturity and resilience. What I have seen over the last three weeks has made me very proud of our GC community.

I understand these are very difficult and anxious times for everyone, and urge you to stay home and keep safe, to support the frontline key workers, and to relieve the burden on the NHS.

My staff will support as much as they can – if you have any concerns please email your tutor in the first instance, or info@gloscol.ac.uk and we will do our best to help you.

We have created a wellbeing and support page for all students, apprentices, staff and parents which you can view here: gloscol.ac.uk/wellbeing

We will provide further updates as we get them through our website.

I wish you all the best and look forward to welcoming our students back to College as soon as we can. In the meantime, stay home and stay safe.

Best wishes,

Matthew Burgess

Principal and Chief Executive
