NAW 2017 - Business Apprentice Case Study: Aimi

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2017 we’re catching up with current and former GC apprentices, who are building their careers, by learning while they earn or have progressed on from their apprenticeship.

In this instalment we hear from finance apprentice Aimi Knight, who is completing her apprenticeship with the Gloucester Diocesan Board of Finance.

What did you do before becoming an apprentice?

I was at Beaufort Cooperative Academy Sixth Form.

When did you start your apprenticeship?

August 2016.

What is your job title?

Finance Assistant.

What qualification are you working towards?

Business Administration Level 3.

What made you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to start a career and gain qualifications, without going to University.

Briefly outline what daily duties you do as part of your apprenticeship.

My main roles include monitoring our income, raising sales invoices and reconciling our bank account.

What is your best thing about your apprenticeship?

Everyone around me is so experienced in so many different areas; I’m constantly learning things about finance that I wouldn’t be taught in a classroom.

What has been your biggest achievement in your apprenticeship so far?

I now have the confidence to deal with whatever telephone queries I get and have Treasurers who contact me directly. My colleagues have also said that I have settled in really quickly, which to me is extremely important.

What do you want to do after completing your apprenticeship?

My employer and I are planning that I will begin studying for a Finance based qualification.

Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship to others? Why?

Yes. There’s such a range of apprenticeships on offer, meaning you’ll gain qualifications and work experience all at once. University isn’t the only way of starting a career.

How have you found the college side of your training?

I only go to college for exams and courses, but I’ve found the lecturers really helpful.

Have you received any stand-out support from your assessor or anyone at your place of employment?

Everyone in the office is so supportive of my apprenticeship, always offering to help with whatever they can.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’m much more independent now and far more motivated to get up in the morning.
