Gloucestershire College celebrates A Level Success
Gloucestershire College is delighted to announce that its Sixth Form students have achieved an A Level pass rate of 98.3%.
This year students sat 287 A Level exams at the College’s campuses in Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean, across a range of subjects including Accounting, Business Studies, Chemistry, English Language and Literature, Further Mathematics, Geography, History, Law and Photography.
A pass rate of 100% was achieved in 23 out of 26 subjects, with 67.2% of students gaining A* to C grades. The overall pass rate across the GC Sixth Form is up by almost 4% compared to the 2015 results.
18-year-old Abbie Perrins from Gloucester, a former Pittville School pupil, more than secured her place at Cardiff University to study English Literature and Philosophy, after achieving an A* and 2 As in Philosophy and Ethics, English Literature, and Sociology.
She said: “I feel proud of my results - It’s been hard work, but it’s paid off.
"I didn’t like school, so I chose Gloucestershire College, and after my experience, I would recommend it to my friends – in fact, one is starting this September. The course was difficult to find, and I’m looking forward to continuing my studies.”
George Porter, a 19-year-old former home schooled student from Shurdington, was delighted to secure two As in History and the Extended Project Qualification. George is now planning his gap year, where he will work and travel around Europe.
He said: “I feel pretty excited by my results! The teaching was brilliant at Gloucestershire College; I really liked the environment and the people.
"My time here has been challenging, enlightening, and fun. I do want to study history at University, and eventually, I’d like to work as an Ambassador in the Diplomatic Service; but not before I’ve taken a gap year and travelled around Europe visiting historic sights. Although cliché, Paris is at the top of my wish list!”
17-year-old Harry Hudson-Gotham from Barnwood picked up outstanding AS results, and now has his sights set on studying medicine at Cambridge University and eventually becoming a plastic surgeon. His three A grades and Bs in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History, certainly make that a possibility.
He said: “I’m very surprised… I was not expecting that - I’m really chuffed!
"During my course I completed work experience at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, shadowing a gastroenterologist, and I’ve just come back from a Summer School at Cambridge University too. In the future, after studying medicine, I’d love to be a plastic surgeon – that’s my goal.”
It was a double celebration for Emily Ludlow from Cheltenham, who achieved the grades she needed to go to Aberystwyth University on her 19th birthday! The former Pittville School student picked up C’s in both Sociology and English and celebrated with her Mum Lisa, who was “mega chuffed!”
Emily said: “I’m more than happy with my results. I’ve got the grades I need to study Geography at Aberystwyth, so I’m one step closer to fulfilling my dream to be a Geography teacher.
"Now I’ve got my university place sorted, I can get on with enjoying the rest of my birthday!”
Principal Matthew Burgess said: “Congratulations goes out to all our GC Sixth Form students who have achieved another fantastic set of results for 2016.
“I’m particularly pleased to hear about a number of individual success stories where students have performed beyond their personal expectations, and to hear that our A Level completers are progressing on to a wide range of next steps, including university, apprenticeships, further and higher education – I wish them all every success in the future.
“I would also like to thank our hard working academic teams, who will be delighted with this set of results; the quality of teaching and pastoral support for students has been excellent.”
Dr Karen Morris, Assistant Principal said: “We are delighted with our results profile, and we’re so proud the hard work of our students and staff has paid off. I’m particularly pleased that all of our STEM subjects have improved their high grade pass rate, and that 23 of 26 A Level subjects achieved a 100% pass rate.
We have been working hard over recent years to develop a high performing culture and ethos in our GC Sixth Forms in Cheltenham and Forest of Dean and this is reflected in these results. Brilliant!”
