A group of ambitious business students at Gloucestershire College are organising an EU Referendum Debate this week, with local MPs and councillors lined up to share their views on the panel.

12 students on the Level 3 Business Studies course will chair the Question Time-style debate, which aims to inform and increase young people’s awareness of the issues around our membership of the EU and whether we should remain in or leave, and encourage them to vote.

There are five special guest speakers on the panel, including Gloucester MP Richard Graham (Conservative), Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson (Conservative), Councillor Richard Leppington (UKIP), Lord Paul Tyler (Liberal Democrats) and Mark Boyce from the Chamber of Commerce. Each will give their reasons why they think we should remain in or leave the EU, as well as take questions from the floor in a Q&A session.

GC staff and students will be asked to ‘vote’ in or out before the event, and then asked again at the end to see if the discussions have changed their minds.

19-year-old Megan Moseley, a former Chosen Hill pupil from Gloucester who is part of the student team organising the event, said: “We are looking forward to the panel discussion on Friday and the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the EU. We feel that as young adults we need to be better informed on the decisions made by Europe that will affect our future.”

Business Lecturer Robert Sean Cotton-Betteridge said: “As part of the Level 3 Business Studies course, students are tasked to organise a business event in order to develop skills such as communication, time management, problem solving, marketing and evaluation. This will ensure they are prepared for the world of work and help them in their future careers.”
