Students compete for World Plumbing Day

Gloucestershire College is joining in the global celebrations for World Plumbing Day on Wednesday 11 March and hosting an exciting competition for its full-time Plumbing students.

Local plumbing employers, merchants and suppliers have all been invited to watch the competition, being held at Gloucester Campus, to see the best of our future plumbers in action and find out more about the benefits of taking on an apprentice.

10 Level 1 and Level 2 students will be tasked to install a radiator incorporating copper and plastic pipework, to be in with a chance of winning a complete plumber’s toolbox filled with £250 worth of quality tools, as well as various runners-up prizes such as hats and tape measures.

Students will need to work via a detailed drawing and demonstrate their practical skills, and will be marked on relevant industry skills such as organisation, tidiness and accuracy.

Plumbing Lecturer, Mike Readstone, said: “By hosting this competition, we want to raise the profile of the Plumbing courses available at Gloucestershire College, which range from Levels 1 to 3. It will be a great opportunity to showcase these and our talented students to local businesses.

“We would also like to highlight the technical aspects of the industry, as well as the different career pathways through which students can progress, such as apprenticeships. World Plumbing Day is about celebrating the important role plumbing plays in the health and safety of modern society. Less fortunate countries lack the basic human necessity of clean drinking water and we want to give the community a better understanding of the role that plumbers play in keeping people safe and healthy each and every day.”

The World Plumbing Day competition forms part of the College’s two-week celebration of National Apprenticeship Week aiming to ‘myth-bust’ misconceptions about and raise awareness of apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships.
