Discover education and employment opportunities in the Forest of Dean

3 July 2014

Gloucestershire College will be hosting its first Forest Opportunities Festival on Thursday 10th July at its Royal Forest of Dean Campus, in Five Acres. From 3pm until 8pm, potential students, job seekers and the general public are invited to the College’s Forest Campus to discover the wide range of education, apprenticeships and employment opportunities available in the Forest of Dean and the surrounding areas.

Supported by The Skills Show, the European Social Fund and the National Careers Service, visitors to the Festival will have the chance to speak to a wide range of local employers and industry experienced college lecturers about further education courses, job vacancies and potential career paths. Visitors will also be able to access free impartial careers advice from the College and Job Centre and take part in a series of hands on ‘have-a-go’ activities, in areas including construction, hair and beauty and health care.

Information on Gloucestershire College’s further education courses, both full and part-time will be available at the event. The College’s offer in the Forest of Dean includes vocational courses in; Construction and Building Services, Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies, Arts and Media, Catering and Hospitality, Sport and Outdoor Adventure, Health, Care and Early Years and IT and Computing. Information on the College’s popular GC Sixth Form will also be available, including details on the GC Sixth Form’s new Career Pathways which enable applicants to select two AS/A2 Levels alongside a vocational course. The new Career Pathways are focused on successful futures in a specific field, such as the Service Industries or Sports and Science.

Information for adults who would like to improve their key skills in Maths and English will also be on offer.

The College is delighted to be welcoming a number of local businesses to the event who will be promoting current job vacancies and future career opportunities within their industry. Confirmed business and partners include; Versarien, Simplicity, SPP Pumps, PGL, Speech House Hotel, Learn Direct, Forest Link, Cinderford Job Centre, Forest Entrepreneurs, Yes2Jobs, South West Apprenticeship Company (SWAC) and Youth Reps, with other companies also to be confirmed this week.

Michelle Louth, Head of Communications at Gloucestershire College said; “The Forest Opportunities Festival provides a brilliant opportunity for anyone looking to explore their next steps in education, part-time course opportunities and to speak to employers who are recruiting in the area. We understand it can sometimes be difficult to access the relevant information to make a decision about your next steps so we have designed this event to help and support people who would like to move forward in education and employment. It’s set to be a relaxed and inviting event and we’re putting on a free BBQ for visitors so keep your fingers crossed for sunshine!”

There is still time for businesses to exhibit at the Forest Opportunities Festival. Please call Gloucestershire College on 01594 838500 or email marketing@gloscol.ac.uk to book your free space.
