Students put their cooking skills to the test in a chocolate themed competition
Secondary school students from the Forest of Dean recently took part in a Masterchef styled competition at Gloucestershire College’s Royal Forest of Dean campus. Seven pupils from Forest EACT Academy, Dene Magna School, Lakers School and John Kyrle High School put their culinary skills to the test to produce the best chocolate themed dessert in ‘The Great Chocolate Cook Off’.
Judged by catering lecturers Tina Roberts and Lawrence Jefferies, and Assistant Site Principal Sandra Tyrrell, the pupils were judged on the various ingredients used, techniques and skills observed during the cook off, creativity shown and presentation and taste of the finished dessert.
The competition was won by 13 year olds Lauren Brain, from Forest EACT Academy and Rosie Pritchard, from Dene Magna School. Both students won a meal for four at the college’s very own on site Beechwood Restaurant, which has recently been awarded a Certificate of Excellence award from Trip Advisor.
Tina Roberts, Catering Lecturer at RFD campus says; “It was unbelievable to see the quality and creativity of these pupils desserts. Each one was different, inventive and most importantly delicious! The enthusiasm and commitment from each student really shone through throughout the competition and we would like to congratulate all of our winners.
We hope that events like this will continue to help build on our relationship with the local schools in the area and provide opportunities for young pupils to develop their culinary skills in an enjoyable way.”
