Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

Are you interested in finding out more about French language and culture? Do you enjoy holidaying in France, and want to get by in the language? Do you have family or friends who live there and speak the language? Do you have a holiday home there, or maybe you are thinking of buying one. Then this is the course for you.

This course is suitable for students who have never studied French before or who studied the language years ago and want to go back to the basics.

Over the course of the three terms students will:

  • study the vocabulary of everyday topics which will enable them to get by when travelling to the country and to communicate on a simple level with local people
  • be introduced to simple but authentic and real reading texts
  • become familiar with the basic rules of grammar, enabling them to create simple sentences independently and to produce simple pieces of writing such as postcards & informal emails
  • through the study of the language, become familiar with many aspects of life and culture

By the end of the course: students will have studied a selection of the following topics:

  • Greetings, goodbyes and other social expressions
  • Family and personal details
  • Numbers, dates, time, colours
  • Where I live / my home
  • Work and daily routine
  • Free time and hobbies / likes and dislikes
  • Out and about (in the cafe/restaurant, directions, shopping, booking a room in a hotel)

Students will become familiar with grammatical structures such as:

  • Gender (masculine, feminine)
  • The present tense of regular and some irregular verbs.
  • Question and negative forms
  • Agreement of adjectives

You do not need to bring anything more than pen and paper and the willingness to try out the language to the first class. The teacher will let you know which text book is going to be used, so that you can purchase / order it before the next class.

What materials or equipment need to be provided by the student?

  • All students need to purchase the text book (Cost: £12.00 - £15.00)
  • Students need to keep a portfolio of their work, so ideally an A4 folder, paper and plastic wallets

  • There are no entry requirements for the Beginners Course. All that is required is enthusiasm and a willingness to put in regular study outside the classroom.

If you have completed the first term of this course either here or at another institution then it may be possible to join the group in January, please contact Student Services for further details. Please note that all courses are subject to a minimum number of learners.

We endeavour to run all classes on the first evening, but a minimum number of learners must have pre-enrolled. A decision to continue to run the class will be made based on the number of learners who attend in the first week.

We recommend that students start in September and continue through to June.

  • If students complete the Beginners Course successfully, provided there is sufficient interest, they can move on to the next level.

Many businesses work with companies abroad, or have branches in other countries. This gives speakers of multiple languages an advantage when it comes to working with larger companies and organizations.

We have courses in French, German, Spanish, and other languages for use in business and socializing. You might end up working for a global investment firm, or as a translator for the police!

Please note, all Language courses (excluding British Sign Language) are roll on courses, which involves students enrolling from one term to the next, building on the knowledge and skills learnt in the previous term. In exceptional circumstances and at the tutor’s discretion, it may be possible to join in-year, if there is already a foundation of language learning at the relevant level.
