Sewing - Part 1

  • Students

A practical course to introduce you to the basics of sewing. Why learn to sew? It’s fun, it’s a new skill and a great hobby. Design clothes to your own taste, make clothes that fit you. Reduce waste - mend that garment instead of throwing it out!

During this termly course you will learn to:

    • Use a sewing machine
    • Make a lined bag from a pattern
    • Insert a zip
    • Produce fashion accessories
    • Sew a button hole & button
    • Sample further sewing techniques
    • What materials or equipment need to be provided by the student?

For the first lesson, we will start by making a lined, quilted zip bag. Please bring the following materials and equipment:

    • 30cm closed end zip
    • 1 metre of non-stretch (woven) fabric
    • Sewing threads for the sewing machine
    • Metric tape measure Ø Tailors chalk
    • Fabric scissors
    • Pins
    • File/folder to collate notes/handouts
    • A smart phone may be used to record demonstrations or take pictures of your work in progress

Fabric can be bought from the tutor priced at £3 per metre & zips £1 each.  Learners are welcome to bring more than one type of fabric.

Each week you will be shown what you need for the following lesson.

Any additional costs the student is likely to incur? Fabrics, threads and trims are to be supplied by the learner at their own expense, although there is a limited supply that can be bought from the college tutor. Cost will depend on your chosen project. Learners may also wish to bring any fabric remnants they have to practice on. Charges for materials are listed separately above.

Your tutor will regularly review your activities and offer you support and guidance. You will be encouraged to identify small, realistic and achievable goals to work towards throughout the course and will keep a learning log to monitor your progress and achievement within the group. There is no qualification associated with this course. You are encouraged to take pictures of your work at each stage to have a personal record of the various processes you will learn.

Gloucestershire College main sites have café facilities, so you might like to enjoy a drink or light snack before the start of your class. Water only is allowed in the classrooms.
