Ideal if: You want to improve your options for the future and need to improve your qualifications before you progress onto your chosen subject.

You’ll learn: The course allows you to specialise in the basic knowledge and skills to progress on to higher level studies in Health and Social Care or Early Years.

Expect: to work on your maths and English functional skills.

You’ll love: work-related activities where you will engage with employers and the local community.

For many reasons, you may not have got the qualifications you wanted at school, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on coming to college or finding a great job! So if you’re not sure on your next steps, but know you want to improve your prospects, take your first steps into further education and keep your options open.

Our First Steps courses offer you flexibility and freedom while introducing you to further study and the world of work. You’ll get plenty of opportunities through work experience to gain the skills that employers are looking for, whilst in college you’ll also learn about your chosen industry and the next steps needed to progress further at GC.

Develop your confidence, English and maths skills, and you’ll have the chance to move on to the next level of study.

You’ll learn functional skills qualifications in English and maths at Entry Level, Level 1 and/or Level 2, plus additional vocational qualifications.

  • Typical Entry Criteria

    • Qualifications lower than three GCSE subjects at Grade 2

      • First Steps programmes are designed for learners who are yet to achieve Gloucestershire College's entry criteria for a Level 1 course.

    Recommended Age Criteria: Under 19 (Learners with an Education Health Care Plan Under 23)

    Gloucestershire College welcome any other/combinations of relevant qualifications that are comparable and/or equivalent to the typical course entry requirements.

    For 19+ applicants that do not have recognised qualifications may still meet course entry requirements through alternative methods of assessment at the College’s discretion.

    All queries regarding course entry criteria including the equivalency of qualifications and exceptional extenuating circumstances should be directed by email to the Admissions Department through applications@gloscol.ac.uk.

  • The general progression route for our First Steps Health, Social Care and Early Years (Level 1) programme is:

    Health, Care and Early Years (Level 1) CACHE Certificate

    Or grade dependant:

    Early Years (Level 2) CACHE Diploma

    Or

    Health and Social Care (Level 2) BTEC Certificate
