Exploring the Caring Sectors

Health, Social Care and Early Years

Level 1
Gloucester

Course Overview

Full Time
Certificate

Ideal if: you have a caring nature and would like to explore careers in the sector, and want to develop the skills needed to progress on to a Level 2 qualification.

You’ll learn: English and maths skills, alongside creative activities with children and young people; how children develop; communications skills in a health care setting; and healthy eating.

Expect: to work with other students to complete a project and demonstrate your learning and confidence. Alongside a focus on English and maths.

You’ll love: lots of practical activities within the class and work experience opportunities in care settings, such as nurseries and residential care and day centres.

This course gives you the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of the skills required to work in health and social care/early years settings and the needs of those you’ll be working with.

You will study:

  • Rights and Responsibilities at work
  • Health and Social Care needs
  • Early Years needs
  • Creative activities
  • Personal care
  • Healthy Eating

Many of our level 1 students progress onto a level 2 programme with us in the following academic year. A previous Ofsted inspection found that "learners like coming to college and value their learning and development, with many already considering themselves as part of the sector workforce."

This qualification is designed to introduce learners to the care needs of children and adults and is a good stepping stone qualification enabling you to decide if Early Years or Health and Social Care is your next step. You will be assessed through your coursework.

  • Typical Entry Criteria

    • Three GCSE Subjects at Grade 2:

      • Recommended Age Criteria: Under 19 (Learners with an Education Health Care Plan Under 23)

Gloucestershire College welcome any other/combinations of relevant qualifications that are comparable and/or equivalent to the typical course entry requirements.

For 19+ applicants that do not have recognised qualifications may still meet course entry requirements through alternative methods of assessment at the College’s discretion.

All queries regarding course entry criteria including the equivalency of qualifications and exceptional extenuating circumstances should be directed by email to the Admissions Department through applications@gloscol.ac.uk.

  • The general progression route for our Health, Care and Early Years (Level 1) programme is:

Early Years (Level 2) CACHE Diploma

    Or

Health and Social Care (Level 2) BTEC Certificate

Rhianna Lewis-Watkins

I want to go into the medical field and this is one of the pathways I can take to get into it. I’d like to be a midwife; I find it fascinating. We’ve learnt a bit about midwifery, and knowing that you’re gonna bring a new life into the world is really exciting. We've learned about healthy living and different legislations, babies growth and development – lots of things!

Abbi-Savannah Braddick

I preferred GC over university as it had more flexible learning around my employment, my lessons were in the evenings meaning I could work in a nursery during the day. My dream career is to run my own nursery, and this course helped me learn important management skills to get myself where I need to be.
