Construction contributes nearly £90bn to the UK economy, 6.7% of the total. There are 2.9 million jobs filled in the Construction industry, around 10% of all jobs (in over 280,000 businesses). The global construction output is forecast to increase from around $8.5 trillion today to $12 trillion in 2025. The UK has the sixth largest green construction sector in the world and around 60,000 jobs are expected to be supported by the insulation sector alone by 2015.
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National qualification suite is designed in close collaboration with industry to help people become occupationally ready to take up employment in the construction sector. This can follow either directly after achieving the qualification, or via the stepping stone of Higher Education in university or college.
There are several options for you to consider:
- 60 credit subsidiary diploma (part time over 1 year) equivalent to 1 A level
- 90 credit diploma (full time over 1 year) equivalent to 1.5 A levels
- 120 credit diploma (part time over 2 years) equivalent to 2 A levels
- 180 credit extended diploma (full time over 2 years) equivalent to 3 A levels
The part time routes are ideal for those already in construction industry related employment.
Example subject areas within the qualifications include; science and materials, mathematics, surveying, principles of design, construction technology, sustainability, health & safety and project management.
By studying these primarily technical qualifications, learners develop knowledge, understanding and skills, including essential employability skills, and apply them in real work contexts

A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*-C or 4 and above, including both English and maths (higher tier/grade 5). Or a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C including higher tier maths or new grade 5.

Upon completion, you may move on to Higher Education courses specialising in construction or civil engineering.
