Ideal if: you have an eye for colour, texture and shape, can spot and develop trends, and want to develop your understanding of fabrics and learn technical skills including pattern cutting, styling and garment construction.

You’ll learn: fashion research and design, illustration, pattern and garment manufacture and methods for promoting your designs and concepts.

Expect: to develop an excellent portfolio of work and take part in catwalk shows and exhibitions.

The fashion industry is an exciting and fast-paced place.  Over £56 million is spent in the UK on clothing every year.  Around 555,000 people at employed in fashion, textiles and fashion retail in the UK.

The course includes:

  • Fashion research, design
  • Illustration pattern and garment manufacture
  • Methods to promote your designs and concepts
  • Completing a portfolio of work and the famous catwalk show

To become a fashion designer, you will need to have:

  • a good eye for colour, texture and shape 
  • an understanding of the characteristics of fabrics and how they can be used
  • technical skills such as pattern cutting and sewing
  • the ability to spot and develop trends
  • drawing skills
  • the ability to use computer design packages
  • an understanding of production processes
  • the ability to solve problems
  • commercial awareness
  • the ability to work as part of a team

You will take part in live assignment briefs and have opportunities to attend high profile events such as London, New York, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks.  You will showcase your work in fashion shows and forge strong links with local designers and retailers.

  • Typical Entry Criteria

    • Five GCSE subjects at Grade 4 and above including:

      • GCSE English Language or Literature at Grade 4 and above or GCSE Maths at Grade 4 and above
      • Four other GCSE subjects at Grade 4 and above

    Gloucestershire College welcome any other/combinations of relevant qualifications that are comparable and/or equivalent to the typical course entry requirements.

    For 19+ applicants that do not have recognised qualifications may still meet course entry requirements through alternative methods of assessment at the College’s discretion.

  • The general progression route for our Fashion and Textiles Design (Level 3) programme is:

    Fashion and Textiles (Level 4 and 5) Higher National Certificate/Diploma

I started studying my A Levels but didn’t enjoy it, so decided to study fashion at GC instead. I feel much more motivated on this course as it’s something I really enjoy and I get a lot of direction from lecturers. On the course we are given a brief but have lots of freedom to do our own thing, and I really enjoy elements such as trend forecasting and marketing.
