Become the teacher you want to be

Employers around the world ask for CELTA, the industry-leading English teaching qualification that proves what teachers of English can do.

It’s the practical English language teaching qualification that gives you the essential knowledge, hands-on teaching experience and classroom confidence to qualify as a teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) both in the UK and abroad.

The CELTA qualification is mapped to the Cambridge English Teaching Framework, and supports teachers to deliver positive impact on learning in the classroom and progress in a teaching career.

Who can apply for the CELTA course?

The course is suitable for those with little or no previous teaching experience and for individuals who wish to enhance their current teaching career with an internationally recognised qualification.

We normally require two ‘A’ Levels, although candidates with other skills and experience but few formal qualifications will be considered.

Candidates must also be a native speaker or a non-native speaker of English with a C2 level of competence.

What does the CELTA course involve?

The course is full-time over a period of 4 weeks at our Cheltenham campus.

It is essentially practical; all input, written work and teaching practice is focused on the needs of the teacher in the classroom.

Students must complete six hours teaching practice and a minimum of six hours observation of EFL lecturers in the classroom. Small groups of students are assigned to an experienced lecturer and regular classes.

The course runs Monday – Friday 9:00 – 18:00.

(Some sessions may be for self-study and preparation; this can be done at college or at home. On non-teaching practice days, input sessions will finish earlier).

Advanced Learner Loan

Gloucestershire College is the only institution in the county which can offer you the Advanced Learner Loan to cover the majority of the cost of your CELTA training.

It’s not means tested and you do not have to start paying back until you are earning over £21,000.
